Climate change remains one of the most urgent challenges facing Uganda today, with women and youth disproportionately affected by its consequences. At Vijana for Sustainable Development and Environmental Action (VIDEA), we actively address drivers of climate change such as deforestation and unsustainable mineral exploitation, both of which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.
Our goal is to equip communities—particularly young people and women—with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to adopt sustainable practices that protect Uganda’s environment while boosting local livelihoods. We facilitate comprehensive training sessions on responsible resource management and advocate for clean, renewable energy technologies, including solar power and biogas, to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. In addition, our tree-planting campaigns help restore natural habitats, combat desertification, and improve air quality, making local ecosystems more resilient. By promoting best practices in waste management and recycling, we encourage communities to reduce pollution, preserve natural resources, and maintain ecological balance.
We also work closely with governmental bodies, community leaders, and other stakeholders to develop policies and regulations that promote responsible mining practices, safeguarding both the environment and the health of neighbouring communities. Through ongoing education, collaboration, and innovation, VIDEA’s Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability programme fosters a culture of stewardship, ensuring that Uganda’s youth and women can thrive in an environment resilient to climate shocks.
